An Interactive Conference on Disaster Management in Africa
Sponsored by The International Emergency Management Society
Dates: 18 April to 17 May 2004
The International Emergency Management Society (TIEMS) is sponsoring a
one month interactive Internet conference on disaster management in
Africa from 18 April to 17 May 2004. This virtual conference will be
held before the 11th Annual TIEMS conference, to take place from 18 to
21 May 2004 in the Yarra Ranges, Victoria State, Australia (see
www.tiems.org for details on the TIEMS conference).
What is the Conference About?
The overall theme for the conference is: Disaster Management in Africa:
Is There a Need?
The topics to be addressed during each week of the conference are as
follows:
Week One
What does disaster management mean in Africa? Start date: 18 April.
Moderated by Salibo Some, Directeur Exécutif, Africa's Sustainable
Development Council, Burkina Faso.
Week Two
Is it possible to develop disaster management as a profession in Africa?
Start 25 April.
Week Three
Integrating risk reduction activities into development planning. Start 2
May Moderated by Dewald van Niekerk, African Centre for Disaster
Studies, North-West University, South Africa.
Week Four
What is needed to make disaster management more effective in Africa?
Start 9 May. Moderated by Steve Hansch, disaster management researcher
and teacher who recently participated in a lessons learned review of the
food crisis in Southern Africa.
The Wrap-up and Closing of the conference will take place on May 16 and
17.
Languages
The primary language of the conference will be English. Comments in
other languages are welcome, but a translation service will not be
provided. (Persons sending comments in other than English may want to
use a Web-base translation service to create a translation from the
original language version into English.)
How will the Conference Work?
At the beginning of each week, a short paper on the week’s topic will be
sent to those who have signed up for the conference. During the
remainder of the week, participants are welcome to post comments on the
paper or topic by sending an email message to the listserv for the
conference (see below).
The results of the conference will be archived, posted on the TIEMS web
site and be available to participants at the conference site in
Australia.

To sign up for the conference you need to sign up with the listserv
through which the conference is being run.
