I'm ever the thicky, but if the magnesian limestone is a major aquifer,
surely the shafts were well-lined as they passed through it in order to
minimise the ingress of water. Now the shafts are filling up, even with
saline water, why should vast amounts of it be able to go the other way?
Surely, in this reverse situation, there pressure in the ground water
resisting the suggested outflows.
