>On a recent visit to the Bucken mine grid ref SD955781, I noticed a ruined
building just below the spoil heaps on the right hand side of the beck. Can
anyone explain what it was?

Barry,
It's a smelt mill - see Gill, 'Yorkshire Smelt Mills, Part Two', British
Mining 48 (NMRS: Keighley, 1993), 138. However, as Mike Gill points out in the
above article, it has nothing to do with the nearby mine level; pre-dating it
by over a hundred years.
