As a photographer a natural genius. His character studies of miners are breathtaking too. He used mainly 6cm x 6cm format SLRs and technique was camera on tripod, open shutter, paint in detail using cap lamp or preferably loco headlamp, close shutter. Something of an acquired skill but VERY effective! Need to consider inverse square law when judging how much time to give to distant vs close objects and to keep the beam moving.
