I just received a flyer announcing that the Second Annual Deadwood
Historic Preservation Symposium will be held in Deadwood, South
Dakota on March 26-28, 2004. Presentations include topics on ore
processing, mining architecture, and evolution of the Homestake
Mining Company. The Homestake gold mine closed about 2 years
ago after 125 years of operation and production of almost 40 million
ounces of gold. Homestake is one of the largest underground mines
in the US with workings extending to below 8,000 feet in depth. The
symposium should provide a chance to witness what is being done
with this large, historic mining complex in the post-production period.
