Laura - quite a lot of lead mining took place in Dumfries and Galloway
during the 18th and 19th centuries. The most important producers were the
East and West Blackcraig mines at Newton Stewart followed by the Woodhead
Mine at Carsphairn. Good background histories to both mines plus details of
smaller lead mines in the area can be found in Ian Donnachie's "Industrial
Archaeology of Galloway" published by David and Charles in, I think, 1972.
For details of lead mines elsewhere in Scotland a good starting point is G V
Wilson's "The Lead, Zinc, Copper and Nickel Ores of Scotland"(Memoirs of the
Geological Society, vol XVII, published 1921).
