Subject: CHISLET COLLIERY VILLAGE
The search for coal started in Kent in the 1880s and the first mine sunk
in Dover using the tools left after the abandonment of the first attempt at
a channel tunnel and the coal seams reached in 1890.although this mine
failed to produce, several other attempts were made in other areas of the
S.E.corner of Kent. eventualy only four mines made it to the production
stage Snowdown Colliery, Tilmanstone Colliery, Chislet Colliery, and lastly
Bettishanger Colliery. With the coal Industry being new to this part of the
world men had to be brought from other areas of the country to work the
mines and new villages built to house the men and their families.I have
just written and had published a book following the development and history
of the village of Hersden and its Colliery from its sinking in 1918 to its
closure in 1969. details of the book can be viewed at wwwbuylocalbooks.co.uk
