Surely it will depend upon definition as to what constitutes an
existing engine house. I would agree with Pete Joseph regarding the
limited extent of Adrian Pearce's list for Cornwall. A further 14 come
to mind, all located in the west of Cornwall:
Two at Gwavas Head, near Porthleven.
Rinsey, near Porthleven
Great Work, Godolphin
Tregurtha, Marazion; now a private house
Gwallon, Marazion: also a private house
Three at Ding Dong, near Madron
(I'll leave St Just & Pendeen to Pete, who will certainly be more
precise than I will be. I'm sure it will double the list I've arrived
at.)
Morvah Consols
Garden Mine
Two at Carn Galva
Giew, nr Nancledra
All those named above (which are not necessarily mine names) are in
varying states of repair, from habitable, although far removed from the
original purpose, to a few walls. The two which have the least remains,
just the low standing walls and stump of chimney are Morvah Consols and
Garden Mine. The two at Gwavas Head are both in a dangerously decayed
condition, but substantially complete. All the rest have had some
consolidation, but I'm pretty sure without roofs. There are also a
number to be found in the vicinity of St Agnes and Perranporth, and
more in the vicinity of Camborne, Redruth and St Day, so there is a
long way to go to complete the Cornish Engine house list. Include the
St Just/Pendeen, and the other districts mentioned and I'm sure the
total would readily exceed 50.
