The term "invert" is in regular use regarding drains being the lowest point
of the inside surface of the pipe,channel etc - i.e. where the water etc
flows
The phrase "..take foundations down to invert level of drains ... " is
common on building plans. When carrying out a survey using a level it is
usual to take the details of the cover and invert level of any manholes on
the site
I was not aware that it had mining origins.
