Thanks for this - I'll follow it up. I had come across the 16th/17th century
Sutton - would it have been likely that later generations also held the 'Grand
Lease'? The context of the reference links it specifically to the ventilation
of coal mines, and the author (d'Holbach - who, it seems, had little direct
experience of mining but was a relatively expert amateur among the French
philosophes) presents Sutton's machine as the best method of ventilation
('Charbon mineral', _Encyclopedie_, III, p. 193) - curious that it should have
disappeared without trace!
