We would like to make a couple of comments with regard to the Extreme
Archaeology programme on Parys Mountain.
The Early Mines Research Group have been investigating the prehistoric
origins of this site for a number of years. David Jenkins has lead the
underground investigation of the site whilst Simon and myself have been
conducting a palaeoenvironmental investigation (pollen analysis,
geochemical analysis, plant macrofossils) of material found in the mine
and also from peat bogs surrounding the mine. We plan to publish our
findings in the near future.
Parts of the programme were a little misleading as the programme
investigators did visit sections and parts of the mine the EMRG had
already investigated. In that sense they found nothing new even though
it might have seemed that way. Trying to make an exciting TV programme
obviously
was more important! We asked the programme makers to acknowledge
previous work that had been done at the site but they chose not to,
apart from some limited material from David Jenkins.
