Thanks John. I'll get hold of a copy. That's a good place to start, Jock

J S Haldane (fellow, New College, Oxford) in conjunction with J S
Martin (Inspector of Mines, S W District) and R A Thomas (Manager,
Dolcoath Mine, Cornwall) undertook an investigation into the health of
Cornish miners in the early twentieth century. Their report was
published in 1904 under the title 'Report to the Secretary of State for
the Home Department on the Health of Cornish Miners' and published by
HM Stationery Office. The report details 342 individual deaths directly
attributable to mining, details include: occupation, place of work
(including frequent mention of South Africa and other overseas
locations), nature of employment (including stoping, driving, pitwork)
and remarks (including alcohol intake). Appendices contains details of
Haldane's work into ankylostomiasis and improvements in dust
suppression and ventilation.
Portraits of Dr Haldane can be found at:

Perhaps not quite what you wanted, but the South African content may be
of use,
Best wishes
John
