Subject: [cairn] Association for World War Archaeology
Dear colleagues,
I would like to present to you the website of our new association: the
Association for World War Archaeology (A.W.A.).
You will find it at http://www.a-w-a.be
If you're interested in World War archaeology in Flanders (Belgium) you
could have a look at it. You're welcome to send us ([log in to unmask])
comments or suggestions. And please feel free to sign our guestbook. Please
spread the message to interested collegues, mailing lists, forums or
friends. We would really appreciate that.
We also have a new publication: "The A19 Project. Archaeological Research
at Cross Roads." You'll find more information about it in the news section.
Those who are in London this weekend could come over to the Special Event
Weekend at the National Army Museum in Chelsea (London): Disquiet on the
Western Front, where the A.W.A. and the Flemish Heritage Institute will
present the work they have done in the last couple of years. You will find
the full program on the website of the museum.
A.W.A. stands for “Association for World War Archaeology” or “Actiegroep
voor Wereldoorlogarcheologie”. In recent years it has become clear that
there is great public interest in World War heritage, but a lack of
resources for communicating the latest developments in this field. This
website has been set up to facilitate access to recent research results for
specialists and the general public within Belgium and abroad. The main
objectives of the association, which deals with World War I and World War
II sites in Western Flanders, are as follows:
1. Inform and sensitise the public and scholars to the importance of World
War I archaeology.
2. Make the results of the past and current research more accessible
through a website, publications, press releases and brochures. Make the
excavations accessible to the public by organising exhibitions, visits to
the excavation site and other activities.
3. Inform and assist amateur archaeologists and associations to carry out
local initiatives in a legal fashion and according to accepted scientific
standards. Provide guidelines and information about professional research-
and excavation methods and the legal and ethical standards of modern
archaeological work
4. Discourage and prevent illegal use of metal detectors in sensitive
archaeological areas and inform metal detectorists about alternative forms
of participation and uses of equipment in connection with authorized
archaeological research.
5. Seek scientific and official support for archaeological research on
World War sites.
6. Encourage and promote the conservation and protection of important
archaeological sites.
7. Coordinate expertise and collaboration of research on World War heritage
by scientific institutions and private associations in Belgium and abroad.
8. Help raise funds to support scientific archaeological research on World
War I sites in Flanders.
9. Enlarge membership among all scholars, heritage officials, and amateurs
interested in World War Archaeology and inform them about the current
research, events and other aspects.
I hope you will enjoy the website!
Best wishes,
Mathieu de Meyer (A.W.A.)
