Maternity Research Seminars
Robbie Davis-Floyd
"Daughter of Time: The Postmodern Midwife."
Date: 30 June 2004
Time: 11:00 to 13:00
Where: Room 1105, Westel House, 32 Uxbridge Road, Ealing, London W5
Davis-Floyd will present her concept of "the postmodern midwife," – a
midwife who is able to relate to medical and other systems of knowledge,
moving fluidly between them to serve the women she attends. She is
locally and globally aware, culturally competent, and politically
engaged, working with the resources at hand to preserve midwifery in the
interests of women. She may be professionally or traditionally educated
and experienced. This concept of “the postmodern midwife” can serve as a
bridge across the ethnic, racial, and status gaps that divide the
professional from the traditional midwife, and as a way of understanding
how the members of each group negotiate their identities and their roles
in a changing world.
All are welcome
