Subject: Education & Preventative Health Care
Dear Colleague,
Greetings from Southend on the east coast of England.
The "Centre for Research on the wider benefits of learning" of the
Department for education and skills has published an interesting report
recently. The authors of this report investigated the relationship between
education and the take-up of preventative health care, with particular
reference to screening for cervical cancer using data from the British
Household Panel Survey
One of the key findings of the report is "prior learning, measured by
highest educational qualifications on completion of full time education,
is positively associated with the uptake of screening.
The authors conclude "Based on our estimates, for each additional 100,000
women in adult learning we expect between 116 and 152 cancers prevented if
the effect is causal".
This 66 page long report can be downloaded from the centre's web site at
the following URL.

Hope the above is of interest some colleagues on our list.
Warm regards & very best wishes,
Badri
