2nd Annual Conference Announcement


BUILDING HEALTH IN THE COMMUNITY
Women, Children and Public Health

The Auditorium
Queen's Park Hospital, Blackburn
18th and 19TH November 2004 

Background

Building on last year's success, this conference will be a
collaborative event involving local communities and national figures. It
will address public health issues for women and children with a focus on
pregnancy, childbearing and early years. Papers will cover local and
national innovations in practice, or primary and secondary research,
specifically in the following categories:

1       Service User experiences 
2       Peer Support
3       Community Development/ Capacity Building
4       Public Health initiatives aimed at tackling inequalities

Aim

The conference will provide the opportunity to develop and disseminate
evidence and good practice in the area of public health in pregnancy,
childbearing and early years. It will attempt to influence working
practice education, management and supervision for midwives health
visitors and community practitioners, in addition to influencing policy
and further collaboration. It will also aim to promote community
development approaches to care, and enhance service user involvement in
research and the development of service provision.

Objectives

1.      To disseminate good practice and research 
2.      To provide the opportunity for collaboration and debate
3.      To discuss an agenda for the future in the area of public health
and women's and early years services

This conference will be of interest to:

*       Midwives, Community Practitioners, and Health Visitors
*       Consultant Midwives and Health Visitors
*       Public Health Practitioners
*       Sure Start Managers and  Practitioners
*       Nursing and Midwifery Students 
*       Midwifery Managers, and Heads of Midwifery and Community
Nursing
*       Service users
*       Lecturers at all levels in Midwifery and Nursing
*       Managers of Midwifery and Nurse education
*       Academics and Researchers working in the area of maternity
services, birth and women's health
*       Supervisors of Midwives
*       Policy makers with an interest in maternity and primary care
services 
*       Commissioners of women's health services

Conference Fee

Booking for one day only 18th or 19th is £80 and includes all
conference documentation, lunch and refreshment breaks throughout the
conference.  

Booking for both days 18th and 19th October is £130  

N.B.    Concessions and bursaries may be available. Please apply if you
believe that you have a special case for asking for one.

Payment Terms
On completion of the booking form, payment may be made by cheque only. 
Receipts will be issued within twenty eight days after the conference. 
Under exceptional circumstances, payment may also be made at the
conference.  

Substitution and Cancellation
If delegates are unable to attend, they may make a substitution at any
time.  If it is not possible to notify the substitution prior to the
conference, this should be done immediately on arrival at the
conference.  If necessary, the booking may be cancelled up to fourteen
days before the conference, in writing.  Refunds will be subject to an
administration fee of £20 plus VAT.  After this date, regrettably, we
cannot make refunds on cancellations.  We strongly recommend that
overseas delegates take out appropriate travel insurance. 

Special Diets
All catering is organised with options to fulfil the requirements of
vegetarians.  However, we can accommodate most dietary requirements if
these are indicated to us on booking.  

Special Needs
The conference organisers particularly welcomes delegates with special
needs.  All buildings have wheelchair access and various other special
facilities.  We are happy to clarify these pri
or to booking.

Quality Assured
At the end of the conference, you will be asked to complete an
evaluation form.  To ensure we maintain a high quality of service, we
welcome your comments and suggestions and would ask that you take the
time to complete these details and return them to us.

Data Protection
The information you provide on the booking form will be held on a
database to process the confirmation of your place.    Your e-mail
address may be used on the delegate list please indicate on the booking
form if you do not wish this information to appear.

The conference organisers would like to receive abstracts detailing
research, best practice and evidence of community and service user
involvement

Papers will be accepted in the following categories:

1       Service User experiences

Papers and posters which cross these categories are also welcome. 
Papers which integrate the views, experiences and expertise of service
users will be very welcome.

An abstract of the intended presentation should be submitted on a
single side of A4 in a maximum of 11 point Times New Roman in no less
than 1.5 spacing. Please include the title on this sheet.  Do not add
any identifying information, as the abstract will be reviewed blind. A
separate covering sheet should also be provided giving the title of the
proposed presentation, and full details of all
co-presenters/contributors.  It should also include details of a single
nominated contact including name, title, organisation, address,
telephone, fax and e-mail.  It should indicate if you wish it to be
considered for oral presentation, as a poster, or either. The contact
address for returning the abstracts (by post or email) is given below.
