A vacancy has arisen for a Curator of Transport to work in the Collections
Unit [Engineering Technologies Group]. The post holder will develop and
deploy knowledge of the past, present and future of transport in all its
forms (land, water, and air), for the engagement, enjoyment and benefit of
our many audiences.
In addition to the study and care of the unparalleled collections of the
National Museum of Science and Industry, future work will involve support
to the refurbishment of the Shipping gallery at South Kensington,
representing the subject of Transport in the Museum’s outposts, and
developing networks in support of the huge enthusiast and special interest
groups across the field [this will exclude the bulk of the rail
collections, which are covered at the National Railway Museum, York].
Candidates should have a good general education, to Masters degree level,
or equivalent experience. They should be able to demonstrate detailed
knowledge of one of the three main fields, a passing knowledge of a second,
and a preparedness to learn about the third. Experience of working with
such collections will be highly valuable.
Good communications skills, both oral and written, are needed to maximise
the use of all media in imaginative and innovative ways. Candidates should
be both self-motivated and good team players, and open to continuing
professional development in themselves and others.
