Dear List,
Øivind Larsen <[log in to unmask]>, Professor of medical
history, University of Oslo, invites applications for a new full
professorship in medical history at the University of Oslo, Norway.
Deadline is February 19. 2004. Professor Larsen directs prospective
applicants to the following website (in English and Norwegian):
http://www.med.uio.no/felles/personal/ledigstilling/
I e emailed Prof. Larsen about this position, the language
requirement and the title of a Norwegian 'professor'. His response
is as follows:
1) It is not necessary to be able to speak Norwegian. The Faculty has
announced the position internationally, approaches the international
scientific community, and they have not put any restrictions on
language in the announcement. English is spoken everywhere here, and
our students even have a semester when all teaching is given in
English only, in order to brush them up.
2) A "professor" in Norway means a top position. The steps below are
"associate professor" and "lecturer". Then comes the temporary
positions as "assistant", "research fellow" etc. The new professorship
is attached to the research group for medical history, which at the
moment consists of myself as a full professor, dr. Aina Schiötz, a
senior (post. doc.) researcher, and two research fellows. We are
located in the Institute of general practice and community medicine,
Section for insurance medicine, occupational medicine, and medical
history.
Yours,
Matthew
