William Byrd and His Contemporaries Outside the Chapel Royal

Two conferences on music in England, c. 1570-1650, will take place on the
weekend of 10-12 September 2004 in the Music School of Leeds University
under the auspices of the Leeds University Centre for English Music
(LUCEM). Accommodation will be on-site, and arrangements will be made for
those who wish to attend both conferences.

10-11 September 2004: William Byrd: the Songs and English Church Music
A review of present-day scholarship concerning Byrd's English-texted
music, the repertory that would have been discussed in Philip Brett's
contribution to Faber and Faber's intended trilogy.

11-12 September 2004: Composers at St Paul's, 1580-1650
This conference will consider some of Byrd's younger contemporaries who
were not members of the Chapel Royal. Such composers had different aims,
methods and styles from their colleagues in royal service, and their
"failure" to comply with the Chapel Royal norms - especially the
continental imitative style - has led to serious misunderstandings about
their work. This conference will focus on the styles and repertories of
composers based at St Paul's cathedral.

A Call for Papers and application form will follow in a few days' time.
