For the RSA 2005 meeting in Cambridge, I would like to organize a panel on
theoretical approaches to elite, intellectual magic. For example, papers
might consider linguistic philosophy and semiotics to interpret Trithemian
cryptography or Dee's angelic conversations; or apply deconstructive
approaches to the demonic/natural magic dichotomy; etc. By "theory," I
mean relatively recent developments in methodology, particularly
interdisciplinary approaches; this is a very broad category. By "elite,
intellectual magic," I mean the general range of material on which Frances
Yates worked. There are infinite possibilities and few restrictions. The
only caveat is that I wish to stay away from witchcraft, although some
crossover makes sense. Cross-cultural and comparative papers are welcome.
