THE SOUND OF THE STONE

In the Jubileum Year 2004, the Xunta de Galicia (Xerencia de Promoción do
Camiño de Santiago) in collaboration with the University of Santiago de
Compostela and the Xacobeo 2004 has decided to present within the frame of
the important conferences which are organized in order to conmemorate the
Jubileum Year 2004 a meeting of specialists on instruments, which is a
branch of a really rich humanistic content and, there is no doubt that it is
of a practical interest.
This interest is due to, on the one hand, the iconologic and ideologic
reading which the instruments gather; and, on the other hand, to the great
quantity of practical derivations which its study brings with: restoration
of instruments, creation of museums, lutheria, exhibitions, etc.

The Department of Music of the University of Santiago de Compostela, an
epicentre of one of the research projects on more relevant Medieval
instruments of the last decade, has called important specialists in various
profiles for the event who will show through their lectures within the frame
of the symposium: proposals, discussions and round tables. The generic
topics which were chosen are: instruments throughout history and literature;
museums and applications; two important iconological topics (David and the
Revelations); instruments and ideology; relationship between cult and
popular instruments and instrumental typologies (guitar and Medieval violas)

REGISTRATION AT THE SYMPOSIUM

We will admit a group of 20 people, who will be chosen according to the CV
they send. Researchers of the various programmed areas who apply for their
participation will be selected.
The applications will be admitted until the 10th of June and they will
inmediately be chosen.
The selected participants will not pay any registration fee, however they
will manage themselves to organize their own travels and accommodation in
Santiago de Conmpostela. In order to ease this business they will be given
