Goldsmiths College, University of London, we are pleased to invite you
to two talks by two distinguished figures in the field of new media.

Frank Webster: ‘Manuel Castells and Contemporary Change’
Frank Webster is Professor of Sociology at City University, London. His
work focuses on developments in the Information and Communications
domain, ranging from conceptual analysis of the ‘information society’,
to studies of informational cities, the virtual university, information
warfare, government information policies, and new social movements’ use
of the internet. His books have been translated into several languages
and include: Theories of the Information Society [1995], 2nd edition
(Routledge, 2002), Times of the Technoculture: from the Information
Society to the Virtual Life, with Kevin Robins (Routledge, 1999),
Culture and Politics in the Information Age: A New Politics? (Routledge,
2001), Manuel Castells, 3 volumes (Sage, 2003), edited with Basil
Dimitriou.

Jane Prophet: ‘Digital space and art practice: a case study’
Jane Prophet is a new media artist. She is Joint Director of the Centre
for Arts Research, Technology and Education at the University of
Westminster, London. Her work includes large-scale installations,
digital print, websites and CD-ROMs. Her art reflects her interest in
complexity theory, landscape and artificial life. Among her past
projects is the award-winning website, TechnoSphere, which reflects her
interest in complexity theory, landscape and artificial life: a real
time 3D version is permanently exhibited at the National Museum of
Photography, Film and TV, Bradford. Site-specific projects include
Conductor (the inaugural installation at The Wapping Project, made using
74 tonnes of water and 120 Electro luminescent cables), Decoy, and The
Landscape Room, which combine images of real and computer simulated
landscapes.
