Dear all,
Members of MeCCSA should receive a copy of issue 4 of Three-D, the MeCCSA newsletter, in the post this week. Copies are mailed individually to all paid-up members. The aim of Three-D is to provide news and comment of relevance to people working in the media, communication and cultural studies fields, in ways that aren’t covered by academic journals and by our website. Contributions don’t necessarily reflect the views of the Association, or its Executive Committee. Issue 4 includes the following:
Appreciations of Tessa Perkins
Georgina Born inside the BBC
Karen Ross on the IAMCR in Porto Alegre
Paul Cobley on Subject Matters
MeCCSA Postgraduate Conference report
Sheila Whiteley on troubles with copyright
Tony Dowmunt and Rosie Thomas on practice PhDs
News: elections, RAE nominations, HEFCE funding
Women’s network
Election details
If you don’t receive a copy of the newsletter by 17 December (to be generous to the Royal Mail at this busy time of year) one of the following factors might provide the explanation:
1. You think you are a member of MeCCSA but in fact you aren't. Most members are institutional members - i.e., their departments join and pay for five or ten or sometimes more memberships. Your head of department, or the person to whom s/he delegates MeCCSA matters, may have omitted to join or rejoin MeCCSA. Or they may have left you off the list of members' names. So in the first instance, you might enquire with your head of department, or MeCCSA rep, about whether your department and/or you are paid-up members. Or check under ‘list of members’ on the MeCCSA website (www.meccsa.org.uk <http://www.meccsa.org.uk/> or google MeCCSA)- though there is a chance that this list might not be completely up to date.
2. You have moved address and/or department and have forgotten to tell us. The current membership secretary and treasurer is Gillian Doyle of Stirling University, and the person to inform is Louise Womersley at Stirling, who runs the database on MeCCSA's behalf. Louise's email address is [log in to unmask] Please don't forget to tell Louise about your new email address, as well as your new postal details, so that we can keep you informed of important issues in between newsletters. If your new department is not an institutional member of MeCCSA, please encourage them to join.
3. Your copy has got lost in the post or someone in your institution has intercepted your copy of the newsletter and prevented it from getting to you. Of course this happens occasionally. However, based on our past experience, one of the first two explanations above is much more likely to be the correct one for the problem.
If you don't receive a newsletter by 17 December, for any of the above reasons, it would help us greatly if you could print a copy from the pdf file which will be uploaded on to the website (google MeCCSA) this week. (You can also find files of the first three issues of the newsletter there). It’s very time-consuming to mail out individual copies and so we would be very grateful if you could take this route.
Three-D is currently produced by David Hesmondhalgh (copy) and Di Harris (design, lay-out, distribution). Ideas for contributions are always welcome – contact me on this email address. We aim to produce two issues of Three-D per year, but because of other commitments, the present plan is for the next issue to be a double issue, to be produced and distributed in September of next year, so the date for copy is 31 August 2005.
We hope that you enjoy your copy of Three-D.
Best wishes,
Dave Hesmondhalgh
