We've used both ImageMagick (http://www.imagemagick.org/) and steghide
(http://steghide.sourceforge.net/) in the past to batch watermark
images, or watermark dynamically.
ImageMagick can composite images for standard 'visible' watermarking,
and steghide provides some steganographic (invisible) functionality. I
think both are open source, or at least allow quite unrestrictive use.
Neither are as powerful as the commercial offerings when it comes to
lasting protection, but they do offer basic protection.
We haven't noticed any issues with file-sizes...
Thanks,
Dan
