Two PhD studentships
Firm Growth Dynamics During Different 'Knowledge Regimes'
Applications are invited for two PhD studentships working on the above
project. One of the studentships will be funded by the ESRC (1+3) and
the other by the Open University (+3). The former is focussed on the
biotech/pharmaceutical industry, while the latter is focussed on any
sector of interest to the student. In both cases, the aim is to
understand how the economic behaviour of firm level growth rates differ
according to the nature and trajectory of key knowledge processes in the
sector (knowledge creation, search and acquisition). The study will use
both quantitative and qualitative methods, linking industrial economics
(e.g. firm growth dynamics) with qualitative work on knowledge processes.
Applicants should preferably have an MSc degree in Economics or
Management Studies, or at least a 2(1) Honours degree in an appropriate
subject. The ESRC ‘1+ 3’ studentship is suitable for candidates without
appropriate research training, providing a first year MSc in research
methods. Applications are invited from candidates with a focus on either
quantitative and qualitative approaches, or an interest in linking these
approaches.
The project will be supervised by Dr. Mariana Mazzucato in the Economics
Department of the Open University and Professor Paul Quintas from The
Open University Business School.
ESRC studentships may only be awarded to a candidate who has resided in
the UK throughout the 3-year period preceding the date of application
for an award and must be either a British citizen or permanent
resident. Candidates from EU countries other than the UK are eligible
for an ESRC ‘fees only’ award. These restrictions do not apply to OU
funded studentships.
For application and further particulars, candidates should contact: Avis
Lexton ([log in to unmask] <mailto:[log in to unmask]>).
Closing date for receipt of applications is 22 June 2004. Interviews
will be held at the Open University on Walton Hall, Milton Keynes, UK on
22 July, 2004.
