Dear Robert (and list)
Co-incidentally I am about to Chair the first committee meeting of the LIRG at CILIP and using the members information service to
respond to your suggestion.
LIRG has a demanding agenda and its first priority is to determine a research agenda for CILIP. This has at its heart, research
that will enable members to determine their usefulness to their organisations by using evidence based research to enhance
practice.
We do not 'sponsor' research'; funding for LIS research is limited, hard won and over subscribed. Our funds to operate come from
capitation, i.e. your subscriptions. However, we are able to suggest funding sources if you wish to pursue the idea that you
outline. Whilst the topic may be interesting to those contributors to the 'debate', I am not sure it would succeed against
pressing needs of impact and evaluation of library services in the community, the role of information to promote social inclusion,
the economics of information provision in developing world and other issues arising from the Information Summit (see IFLA web
pages)
Thre is a big agenda to cover and if you were moved to assist us you would be welcome.
best wishes
Biddy Fisher
Head of Learning and Research Support
Sheffield Hallam University
and
Chair of the Library and Information Research Group of CILIP.

There's an interesting research project in membership
disaffection here, isn't there? Is the Library and
Information Research Group interested in sponsoring some?
