Well Tony, if I remember rightly, your last job was with the BMA, who
certainly are a stroppy lot, & very quick to defend the interests of their
(it's?) members. I also think you had a moderately numerous staff, which
meant that you had people ensuring that front line services continued while
you were attending CILIP Council & working on our behalf.
Unfortunately many CILIP members (& non-members) run one-person services (or
even less than one). This means that their services shut down while they
attend meetings, deal with CILIP business etc. It can be difficult to get
employers to release you for meetings, & training or personal professional
development might be seen as a priority. There's also the question of the
overnight stay if you live more than a couple of hours travel from London.
Additionally there are many people involved in their profession in other
ways, more locally, or with a specific specialist focus, or even outwith
CILIP. To suggest that if people don't stand for Council they are not
interested in developing their profession is not reasonable.
