I would urge all to use your votes wisely as there are some here that don't
get the right to vote.

Subject: [LIS-CILIP] Subs Postal Ballot
I'm in the company of Charles Oppenheim and hundreds of other members who
don't pay an annual sub because we are life members and/or Honorary
Fellows and are not directly affected by the outcome of the ballot. I
shall vote and hope others in the company of non-payers will for it is a
matter on which CILIP does not, I think, want a result on a low turn out,
a wide scale and apathetic voting with the feet.
The ballot is, however, a single issue referendum. Single issue-ism will
be a feature of the American Presidency and could be in the UK if we have
a referendum on Europe when people who have all sorts of grumbles and
doubts about the present or whatever government (eg, university fees and
grants, fox hunting, the environment, retirement pensions, state of the
railways) may use the referendum as an opportunity to thump the
government; it would be a drear day if we were UKIP-ed.
The matters raised on this list and elsewhere have expressed criticisms
about salaries, qualifications, London centrism and generally CILIP
doesn't do much for me personally. I have one or two serious criticisms of
CILIP (eg, failure to assure new CILIP Regional Branches of the resources
they need for their new and additional responsibilities, a publishing
practice which precludes, unlike that of the American Library Association,
the publishing of valuable professional literature which won't make a
profit).
I shall put those criticisms on the back burner and vote as to whether or
not I think the flat rate subs proposal is for the good of CILIP and find
other means of thumping the characters, officers and elected Councillors,
in Ridgmount St. I hope others will consider both these approaches when
filling in their ballot paper.
