I feel that we should be encouraged that 'CILIP' will be able to find sufficient time to consult, write and agree a response to
what may be an issue of significant impact on the future of the Public Library. This at the same time that, due to membership
demand, the staff at Ridgmount Street are also having to organise a ballot on the very subscriptions that pay for such activity.
Guy has until November 12th to complete this and I hope that he will find sufficient evidence to enable that response to deal
with, among others, one of the issues listed, that of recruitment and training of staff.
Both of these activities - advocacy on behalf of the Public Libraries to government and responding to membership demand - are
consuming the scarce resource that is our subscriptions and it is typical of the demands that we make on those staff. Were there
to be no professional body to speak on behalf of the work that Public Librarians do, I wonder how many of us would spend as much
time making an individual response to the issue, as has been spent on matters of subscriptions. It is of course a matter of
priority and I trust that the response will provide DCMS with evidence for more public funding to support that work

Subject: Public Libraries Inquiry
Members will be interested that the Culture, Media and Sport Select Committee have announced an inquiry into public libraries. You
will find details at:
http://www.parliament.uk/parliamentary_committees/culture__media_and_sport/culture__media_and_sport_press_notices.cfm
Clearly CILIP will be making a submission and we are planning how to put together CILIP's response. We will also offer to give
oral evidence. I will post another notice as to how CILIP will be organising its response but if you wish to comment in the
meantime, please send your comments to me atthe address below.
