Many legal issues affect the work of information professionals.
Increasingly there is a pressing need to remain abreast of
developments in several key areas – copyright, database right and
data protection are obvious examples. But the burden is increasing
all of the time and the prudent information professional needs to
extend his/her awareness - such as freedom of information,
disability discrimination law, legal issues in IT procurement etc.
This one-day meeting seeks to raise awareness and knowledge of
some of recent developments of concern to information
professionals. The meeting will focus on recent developments in a
number of mainstream areas. For example:
* Almost one year on from major changes to UK copyright law,
the meeting will provide an expert review of, and update on,
the implementation and impact of these changes
* Key developments in data protection will be reviewed
* With the imminent approach of the full entry-into-force of
freedom of information legislation in the UK, key issues and
developments in this field will be covered
* Reviews of any other topical issues (disability discrimination;
contracts and licensing; other IP rights; legal issues in IT and
software purchasing etc.) will be provided
* A whole session will be devoted to approaching and managing
legal issues for information professionals
Opportunity will be built in to the meeting for open discussion of
prepared scenarios and for question and answer sessions
