Subject: Reading First in South Africa
This is the newest volunteer opportunity from the World Library
Partnership. Enjoy!
Reading First in South Africa
2 Weeks
October 18-29, 2004
www.worldlibraries.org
Introduce preschool children to the joy of reading!
South African children cannot wait to climb in your lap to hear what may
be their very first book. The Reading First program will begin with four
days in Pretoria/Johannesburg where you will learn about South African
libraries, schools, books and culture. You will practice reading to
children and learn how to demonstrate reading techniques for caregivers
and parents. You will also prepare books to give to pre-school students
so that they can enjoy having a book to keep and share. Finally, you
will visit urban libraries, museums and reading programs to learn about
the role of books and libraries in a South African context.
After your stay in Pretoria, you will travel to beautiful KwaZulu Natal
where you will relax with a weekend safari. After seeing some of South
Africa's stunning wildlife, you will spend 4 days visiting preschools
and an orphanage where you will read to children, hold family literacy
workshops, do book-related art projects and just spend time with the
kids. After the day's work is done, you can relax at nearby Sodwana Bay
or enjoy meeting people in the village of Mbazwana.
This program is limited to a maximum of 14 people. Applications will be
considered in the order they are received. We will begin accepting
applications on July 15. We expect the program to fill quickly, so
please apply early. The cost of the trip is $2600 (airfare not
included). Trip fees and expenses are generally tax-deductible and
support rural African libraries and librarian training.
For more details and the application, please see www.worldlibraries.org
