In her piece, Margaret Watson says 'Belonging to a professional
association is more than paying the subscription" and I think the same
can be said of CPD. In common with other awarding bodies, it is
important for CILIP to ensure that the practitioners it endorses are
being continually developed through structured, validated processes. As
the Framework proposes, this doesn't just mean formal education and
training. Practical experience can be validated too by supportive
employers. The fact that we may not have been dutifully recording all
this in "portfolios" is probably because we haven't had too. Updating
your CV ready for the next interview is a poor substitute for a properly
constituted revalidation process and I applaud CILIP for biting the
bullet.
I buy my post nominals every year and trade on them to some extent, but
they don't in any way tell the whole story about my professional
credentials. As a NVQ Assessor, I have to provide strong CPD evidence
every year and my annual contract with ILM is only renewed following a
re-assessment of my development.
On a lighter note, I had to smile at our moving UP to tabloid format
when everybody else seems to be moving DOWN to it! Still, it was folded
into A4 for posting so there's continuity for you.
