The John Rylands University Library of Manchester (JRULM) is the third
largest academic library in the United Kingdom. Its collections include
extensive holdings of Middle Eastern materials (in printed, manuscript and
electronic form).
As the Assistant Librarian with responsibility for Middle Eastern Studies
you will have responsibility for liaising with the University's Department
of Middle Eastern Studies, which achieved grade 5 status in the last
Research Assessment Exercise. You will also be responsible for developing
the Library's collections in this field of study, for cataloguing new
material, for providing user education to the department's students, staff
and others, and for answering queries from both within and outside the
university relating to your area of responsibility. You will also
represent the Library at committee meetings, conferences etc as required,
as well as serving on the Library's Duty Officer rota and participating in
the general work of the JRULM.
To apply, you should have a thorough knowledge of Arabic and either
Persian, Turkish or Modern Hebrew, together with a willingness to acquire
sufficient knowledge of the other languages to be able to catalogue and
undertake basic enquiry work.
You should also have excellent communication and organisational skills and
be experienced in the use of computers and electronic library resources.
Classification and cataloguing skills as well as previous employment in an
academic library in a subject field related to Middle Eastern studies will
be additional recommendations. You will be expected to have a good honours
degree in a relevant subject that includes a substantial language
component and a professional qualification in librarianship or information
studies will be an added recommendation.
Salary will be on the ALC Scale Grade 1/2, £18,265 to £27,339 per annum
(pay award pending) depending on qualifications and experience
