As MELCOM-International's representative on the Council of the European
Association of Middle Eastern Studies (EURAMES), I give here a brief report
on the Annual Meeting which took place in London on 6 July 2004, under the
Chairmanship of Prof. Günter Meyer of the University of Mainz. In addition
to myself, there were representatives from Germany, Great Britain, Italy,
Norway, Poland and Romania.
The President/Treasurer (Günter Meyer), Vice-President (Knut Vikør) and
Auditor (Hilary Kilpatrick) were re-elected.
The next EURAMES Congress will be in Durham in September 2005, in
collaboration with the British Society for Middle Eastern Studies
(BRISMES).
The Second World Congress for Middle Eastern Studies (WOCMES) will take
place in Amman, 12-16 June 2006. It will be hosted by the Royal Institute
of Interfaith Studies (RIIS) with support from the EURAMES/WOCMES
Secretariat in Mainz. Proposals for workshops, symposia and conferences to
take place under the WOCMES umbrella are invited. MELCOM-International was
invited to postpone its May 2006 Conference to June and hold it in Amman as
part of this framework; but this must of course be considered carefully by
the MELCOM Board, in relation to other proposals.
The EURAMES Info Service continues as an E-mail announcement service; in
addition, it is now proposed to expand the information about forthcoming
conferences on the EURAMES website. Any such information should be sent to
the webmaster, Knut Vikør, at [log in to unmask]
Professor Marta Petricioli announced the forthcoming conference of the
Società per gli Studi sul Medio Oriente (SeSaMO) in Lecce in November 2004,
and invited all EURAMES affiliates to attend.
The website of EURAMES is at http://www.hf.uib.no/smi/eurames/eurahome.html
Requests to subscribe (free) to the EURAMES Info Service, and information
to be disseminated through it, should be sent to [log in to unmask]
