Some correspondents have challenged my assumption that Agenda will mean an overall increase in wage bills. I admit my opinion is skewed by considering the lot of librarians, who I believe will generallly do quite well because of their present poor position vis-a-vis other professions. But consider this: many Trusts will have to re-instate spine scales; staff translocating to new paybands will transfer to the nearest equivalent of their present salary but not to a lower level; those who lose out will have pay protected for 5 years to cushion the transition; the rep. at a Union meeting I attended indicated that the anticipated results of Agenda were that 60% would gain, 20% stay the same, and 20% lose. The 20% losing would have to lose an awful lot between them to fund the 60% that gain. The figures do not add up.
