SELECTING ELECTRONIC PRODUCTS: A BEGINNER'S GUIDE
3 February 2005, London
Those responsible for the selection, purchase, customisation and exploitation of electronic information resources need to develop new skill sets: including decision-making, analysing, influencing, negotiating or business understanding. The selection of electronic information products is a complex process. It is essential to understand why the information is needed and to have awareness of the full range of information resources available. It is equally important to be able to keep within restricted budgets and be confident enough to decide between similar resources.
BENEFITS FROM ATTENDING
This workshop is designed to assist participants to develop the skills and confidence needed to select electronic information resources in a structured and systematic way. Some practical sessions will be included.
BY THE END OF THE EVENT PARTICIPANTS WILL HAVE:
* developed a more structured approach to the selection of electronic resources
* identified some ways to assess organisational information needs
* considered the use of policies for the selection of information resources
* used selection and evaluation criteria
* identified essential records and procedures
WHO SHOULD ATTEND
Those information and library staff who are about to or have recently started a role involved with the selection and purchase of electronic information resources. An advanced workshop, Selecting electronic products: beyond the basics (http://www.cilip.org.uk/training/training/pts/sepbeyondbasics.htm), for people with more experience in the role is also available.
