Hi
The updated 2004 (4th ed) of the Wessex Classification Scheme is now available online at <http://www.swrlin.nhs.uk/Wessex Scheme.htm>. The classification scheme is freely available to all and can be printed or used as an online resource. (Please note that the scheme can no longer be purchased from the South West Regional Library Unit). For existing users there is a 'summary of changes and additions' available on the site that can be used to annotate existing printed copies. However, as minor alterations have been made throughout the scheme this may be an opportunity to print a completely new copy.
It has not been possible to update the Annotated Subject Heading Index as part of this project, but the existing 1999 edition will remain on the website until an update is complete. Please bear in mind that some cross-references will not tally with the new scheme for the time being. The South West Cataloguing Group have offered to update to the Subject Heading Index and this will hopefully be available on the website in early 2005.
Contact details for the working group are available on the website so that users can offer feedback, ask questions or register suggestions for changes. All users are encouraged to submit suggestions for future changes as it is hoped that the scheme will now be updated on an annual basis.
This new edition is the result of much hard work and collaboration by many users of the scheme and I would like to take this opportunity to thank everyone who completed the initial survey in January and offered their views and gave me feedback throughout. In particular, the members of the newly formed Working Group have spent huge amounts of time reviewing my drafts and commenting on particular issues, and the South West Knowledge Resources Development Unit staff have updated the website as the project developed. I hope that all this energy and enthusiasm is reflected in a user friendly and relevant scheme.
Regards
