1) "You could add barcodes to just the ones that are
borrowed from the library if the issues are taken out via an Issue Desk. We
have a load of old issues received prior to the computerised issuing system
and we add them to our catalogue if someone borrows it. We stick a barcode
on and then give it a brief catalogue record."
2) "In my previous post, however, we had a paper based system for journals too.
We allowed them out for one week. To keep track of them, we had a number of
date labels with barcodes on them. When someone borrowed a journal we put one of the date labels in
it and entered the title, volume, issue of the journal onto the catalogue
record. It was a little bit more time consuming than we'd have liked, but it
did mean we could track who was supposed to have what and send them overdues
etc. Current journal issues were not allowed out."
3) "We don't lend journals but encourage people
to read them in the library."
4) "Cunning sometimes works....You could have a competition...announce a 'cod' stock check, and 'beg' for the return of all outstanding journals. Offer a prize for the journal that's been away from home longest (I tried this very successfully when my company relocated from one part of Bristol to another).
Alternatively - change the policy and announce that, because of the unhelpful behaviour of some of your medical colleagues, you are suspending the facility forthwith. This will be easier if you regularly bind some titles. Explain that personnel are very welcome to photocopy articles (as far as legislation permits!) - but as so many issues are missing, it is no longer viable to allow them off site. Couple this with an offer to distribute contents pages to any interested parties."
5) "can you pre-empt them with a "special service just for them" by circulating the contents pages or some sort of digest of useful material whilst taking the journals somewhere safe"
I think that just about covers everything everyone had to say about what thye do without repeating. I think i've found the methods that will work best for us.
Thanks once again for all the replies.
