To summarise the responses to this query (18 in total) --
Job Titles : of those posts which were dedicated wholly to library
system administration, the most common was Library Systems
Manager (8) followed by Systems Librarian (3) and Information
Systems Manager (2) and Information Systems Librarian (1). Others
included Library Management System Librarian, Library Systems
and Database Officer, Head of Library Systems.
Support titles : In addition to the above, HE institutions were more likely
to have full-time system support staff, e.g. Library Systems Administrator,
Library Systems Analyst/Programmer, Library Systems Developer,
Assistant Systems Librarian, Library Systems Officer, Library Database Manager,
Information Systems Assistant.
Average number of system admin and support staff in HE institutions: 2.5
Some single FE colleges incorporated systems admin with other duties, e.g.:
"Last year I was both systems and e-learning manager so in effect did it half time."
" ... e-resources (selection, maintaining contracts etc), leading the team of ILT
assistants (10 open access computer centre staff), subject liaison, user education ..."
"We have a Subject Librarian who also acts as Systems Administrator."
I can't make any direct comparisons between the sectors given that
the type of system wasn't specified, i.e. some of the FE colleges may
be working on the likes of EASL or Bookshelf rather than the
high-level likes of Sirsi, Dynix, Endeavor, etc.
And I should have asked whether the top post-holder held a library
qualification or an IT-related one .... maybe next time!
Thanks for all the responses,
Andrew Jackson
