Some years ago our library moved into a space that was formerly a
performance area for the college.
The main library space is primarily a single area of approx. 45 ft by 60
ft with approx. 30 ft high ceiling, with lighting units embedded into the
ceiling. This room contains bookshelves, study tables and the library issue
counter/enquiry desk.
The library receives plenty of natural light through very large windows on
two sides, but lighting between shelving stacks has always been difficult
with several dark spots particularly at night.
We may have the opportunity to improve this situation soon, so I'm trying to
gather as much information as I can about how other libraries have addressed
difficult lighting situations.
Does anyone have experience of lighting a similar area satisfactorily - I
would be interested to hear from you. Perhaps you could recommend suppliers
of suitable lighting equipment or maybe you know of a relevant British or
European Standard we can refer to (2002 European Standard EN 12464-1, Light
and Lighting - Lighting in Work Places - Part 1: Indoor Work Places is
relevant; does anyone know of any others?)
I would appreciate it if anyone would share their experience with me.
I'll be happy to summarise responses for the list.
