APOLOGIES FOR CROSS-POSTING
Thesauri and classification in the age of the Internet
Date: Tuesday 9 November 2004
Time: 6.30 pm
Venue: The Sekforde Arms, Sekforde Street, London EC1
Speaker: Dr Leonard Will, Consultant
There has recently been a rediscovery of the value of thesauri and faceted
classification schemes (albeit under the more fashionable name of
"taxonomies") for searching and browsing collections of electronic
resources. This talk will discuss underlying principles and opportunities
for applying them in an electronic environment, as well as seeking to
clarify terminological discrepancies that cause confusion when these topics
are discussed.
Leonard Will is a consultant in information management with a special
interest in subject indexing and classification for providing computerised
access to the resources of libraries, museums, archives and the Internet. He
is a member of a British Standards Institution working party that is
drafting revised British Standards on structured vocabularies for
information retrieval, and is a chartered member of CILIP and the British
Computer Society. Until 1994 he was Head of Library and Information Services
at the Science Museum, London.
CILIP in London evening meetings are free and open to all with a
professional interest in the topic. Refreshments will be available
afterwards. As space is limited, please let us know if you are coming.
