International Association of Music Libraries, Archives and Documentation Centres is delighted to announce a visit to three important London music collections:
School of African and Oriental Studies (SOAS)
Jewish Music Institute (JMI)
Foundling Museum Handel Collection

10.30. SOAS and JMI, Thornhaugh Street, Russell Square, London
An opportunity to see one of the country’s most important ethnomusicological collections. The session will begin with refreshments followed by a presentation from Yoshiko Yasumura (SOAS) and Geraldine Auerbach (JMI) and tours of the two libraries. The SOAS library contains important field recordings, field notes and slides as well as a large collection of secondary literature. The JMI collection of printed and recorded music represents the wide diversity of Jewish musical culture, including Ashkenazi, Sephardi, Western and Israeli liturgical and secular traditions and it includes material relating to British Jewish cantors and choirmasters.
12.30. Lunch (not provided). Attendees may wish to take lunch in the nearby British Museum’s Great Court or at the Foundling Museum café.
14.30. The Gerald Coke Handel Collection at the Foundling Museum, 40 Brunswick Square, London
After being closed for over four years, this fascinating museum has recently reopened. The visit will provide an opportunity to discover more about the link between the Foundling Hospital and Handel. See unique material associated with Handel as well as some important art works. The core of the Library is the Gerald Coke Handel Collection which comprises manuscripts, scores, memorabilia and books. Refreshments will be available.
Cost: Free to IAML members. £5 for non-members. Places are limited so booking is essential.
