Hi Vivienne,
Audio editing software packages such as Cool Edit Pro or SoundForge often include a simple crackle/hiss removing tool which can be used to remove extraneous noise from recordings - HOWEVER the results of applying these oversimplified algorithms to 'real world' recordings are often fairly unsatisfactory, and overenthusiatic use can introduce a different set of unpleasant effects such as wow and harmonic distortion.
'Real' audio cleanup is expensive and difficult!

Subject: Vinyl recordings
Good morning,
One of our students has just asked if it is possible to clean up vinyl
recordings. He's bought some old vinyl records which are scratched and
he has heard it is possible to get them cleaned up; he wants to
re-record them onto CD format so wants the best quality originals he can
get.
I've never heard of this being done, does anyone know if it is possible?
Regards,
