Apologies to those who have already seen this, but it is useful in the context of the recent debate on CDs on lis-ill.

Subject: Fw: [MLA-L] CD ILL policies summary
Dear Everyone:
I'm forwarding this message from the MLA-L list. I know that various people
within IAML (UK) -- and perhaps this is a live issue in Ireland as well --
have thought about the inter-lending of CDs. The answers below, supplied by
Sheridan Stormes, give a snapshot of where US libraries are on this issue.
Maybe if people on the IAML (UK/Irl) list have things to say on this as
well. My own opinion is that it's well worth thinking about, given that
packaging of CDs for ILL is much simpler than that of LPs, and there is less
potential for damage (and don't most of us have "spare" CD cases for those
instances where cases are returned broken?)
All best,
John

Subject: [MLA-L] CD ILL policies summary
Colleagues:
First, I would like to express my sincere gratitude to all who responded to
my recent query regarding inter-library loan policies for compact discs in
academic libraries. I finally have compiled the results. I received 28
responses, many of which included very thoughtful comments. I have tried to
represent these in as succinct a format as possible. This apparently is a
pretty "hot" topic! Hope these responses are helpful to those of you
contemplating the issue!
Sincerely,
Sheridan Stormes

OK -- here goes:
10 of the respondent libraries DO currently loan CDs through ILL.
Of those:
one has a separate circulating collection of duplicate CDs;
one will loan only to those institutions that reciprocate;
one will loan only to branch campuses of the same institution; and
one will loan only to libraries within the state or consortium partners or
on a case-by-case basis.
18 of the respondent libraries DO NOT currently loan CDs through ILL.
However, of those:
two will loan to other institutions during the summer months;
one will loan to faculty in two other network schools;
two are actively considering changing their policies and a couple others
MIGHT change under certain circumstances.
The following remarks, also, were included:
Benefits:
Engenders good will; encourages reciprocation.
CDs requested are often the more obscure titles; no impact on day-to-day
support.
One institution received a large gift of CDs as a result of their
willingness to ILL CDs.
Relieves pressure of collecting EVERYTHING your patrons need.
Concerns/Negative effects:
Problem with turn around time (CDs circulate for 1 week or less within the
owning institution).
Covers/jewel cases take a beating (several lending institutions indicated
this).
Extensive damages to items.
Expensive replacement costs.
Needed for classroom use.
Classical/World Music CDs are difficult/impossible to replace; people may be
willing to pay replacement costs for rare/out-of-print titles.
OTHER considerations:
Can institution to whom CDs are lent be held accountable if item is lost?
Hesitant to lend "standard repertoire" items to public libraries.
Existing circulation policies (for faculty/staff/students) -- many are quite
restrictive.
How collection is used - light/heavy; do faculty "plan ahead" or come in
spontaneously?
Streaming audio makes less necessary.
Ease of placing items on reserve.
ILL activity may increase noticeably.
Size and nature of collection.
Make note on ILL form to "Please return "X" number of CDs and booklet! (to
insure EVERYTHING is returned!)
Is collection available for in-house use to others in state?
Consider purchasing CD shipping boxes.
