Dear all,

We are also looking into electronic signatures at Reading University
Library. I would be interested to know what the following libraries are
doing, because I had heard that they had already started using
electronic signatures.

Kings College - http://www.kcl.ac.uk/iss/library/services/ill.html
http://www.kcl.ac.uk/depsta/iss/library/infosheets/docdel.pdf

Holloway -
http://web.rhul.ac.uk/Information-Services/Library/about/interlibraryloa
ns.html

Newcastle - http://www.newcastle.ac.uk/library/ill_web.php

If anyone has any more information, please could you let me know?

Many thanks,

Leanne

Hi Annette
We too have been trying to look into this. It makes a mockery of having
an online requesting system, doesn't it, when users still have to print
off and sign, and we have to wait for that signature before we can
proceed. As far as I can make out, it's theoretically possible to have
an electronic signature, but the authentication that would make it legal
is not yet available. (BL tell me they are working on a solution, but
how far down the road? I'd be very interested to hear anything useful
you find out.

Dear Annette,
This is something that we have wanted for a long time also - we use
ILLOS online request form and our users are very frustrated that they
still have to sign a physical bit of paper before their request can be
processed.

I asked the British Library about electronic signatures recently and was
given to understand they would not be acceptable. I would be very
interested to hear what you find out!
All the best,
Monica

Subject: Electronic signatures for online requesting

At Sussex University Library we are currently using Talis Prism for
online requesting of Interlibrary Loans. The online requesting works
well for books, but our users often want photocopies sent to their home
address or campus pigeon hole which is not possible without having
signed the copyright declaration. I would be interested to hear from
any libraries that have set up, or are thinking about setting up,
electronic signatures for requesting photocopies through an online
Interlibrary Request service even if you are not using TALIS Prism.
The CILIP web pages have indicated for sometime that it is legal to use
electronic signatures provided the authentication is capable of
identifying the signatory:
<http://www.cilip.org.uk/committees/laca/e_sigs.html>
so I am trying to find out if the Interlending community has come to any
agreement on what kind of authentication would be acceptable.

Regards,
Annette Moore
