We have had similar experiences with Nature.
I agree with Chuck. In contrast to Nature, earlier this week I received an email from the American Physical Society announcing price decreases for 2005, on the basis that the price reductions "reflect a long and intense development of new technology both by the Society and its vendors as well as persistent attention to cost control by all of the staff. They also represent the Society's commitment to returning the advantages of technology to the community."
This is the first such communication I can remember receiving and a useful precedent to bring to the bargaining table.

Right, and its pure nonsense as an argument. Ranks somewhere in there with
the cost of postage argument publisher's use to drag out every year.

Membership of COUNTER is 500 GBP per annum as far as I understand.

Dear all,
Here at UCL we've just received our quote for the renewal of the majority
of our Nature e-journals. I was rather shocked to discover that the price
increase across the 14 titles was nearly 75% on last year.
I contacted NPG about the large price increase and the reasons that were
given were the introduction of COUNTER compliant stats and that the
e-journals were previously under priced in comparison with the print.
hmm. Seems like a big increase to me...
Has everyone else out there had a similar experience?
cheers
James
