Rich, well-structured and extensible metadata is becoming increasingly vital in supporting the discovery, sales and usage of serial products. This Technology Update will introduce the ONIX for Serials metadata standard and the ONIX messages developed to date to meet a range of business needs.
ONIX for Serials has been designed to address the needs of players across the serials sector, whether they be publishers, librarians, hosting services or A&I providers. Expressed in XML to ensure complete platform-independence and web-friendly interfacing, the standard is based upon a carefully structured data dictionary, and is deliberately extensible to meet emerging needs.
As well as describing the origins, purpose and governance of ONIX for Serials this session will also actual and potential applications in the industry. Developments to date to support exchanges of information at the product, title and subscription level will be reviewed against the background of successful pilots of the first ONIX messages. Work in progress to facilitate release-level exchanges (e.g. for articles and issues) will also feature, demonstrating the range and power of the approach.
