Institute of Physics Publishing is happy to announce the acquisition of
50% of Turpion Ltd from the Royal Society of Chemistry. The other 50%
shareholder is Pion Ltd. The change in ownership is effective from January
1, 2004.
Turpion represents an effective cooperation between the Russian Academy of
Sciences and learned societies in the West to make available English
translations of leading Russian journals in physics, maths and chemistry.
It was founded in 1990 by the RSC and Pion. The RSC will maintain its
association with the chemistry journals, and the London Mathematical
Society with the maths journals.
No immediate changes are envisaged in current arrangements for customers,
circulation or web access, nor in the staffing arrangements in Moscow.
Over time IOP hopes that its involvement will enhance all aspects of
Turpion to the benefit of customers and authors and to relations between
Russian and Western scientists.
'I am delighted to be a partner in Turpion,' said IOP Publishing Managing
Director Jerry Cowhig. 'I have long been an admirer of the company and its
journals. Moreover, collaboration with the Russian Academy of Sciences and
its journal Editors takes us to the very highest level of Russian
science.'
IOP already has two editorial offices in Russia. It also has editorial
offices in China and Japan, and publishing collaborations with the Chinese
Physical Society and many other international scientific societies.
Partnership in Turpion is a further step to develop IOP's relations with
authors from all leading research countries.
Lev Malov, Turpion's Manager of Administration and Marketing based in
Moscow, will be at the London ALPSP meeting and UKSG in Manchester later
this month, and at SLA in Nashville in June. Jerry Cowhig will also be at
ALPSP and SLA. Both Lev and Jerry will be happy to talk about Turpion.
Their contact details can be found below.
