The Radical Library 2: proving value
Tuesday 11 May 2004
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Following our successful meeting last November, this UKSG seminar will
continue the Radical Library theme, looking specifically at how library
staff and services add value for the academic community. Adding value in
itself is not enough in these days of tight resources - we have to be able
to prove this in different ways to make the best case for preserving or
increasing our budgets. Mark Bide will introduce the seminar with a
discussion of the concept of added value in the information context. Other
speakers will then demonstrate how they have brought this concept to bear in
their own fields, whether within the operational or budgeting processes of a
single library, or in developing appropriate ways of measuring added value,
or, more widely, how the system of scholarly communications might change to
become more productive. In addition to presenting a paper on measuring
value, Eric Davies, Director of LISU, will summarise the day's proceedings
and send us home determined to make use of what we have learned.
This one-day seminar is a valuable opportunity for librarians, publishers
and intermediaries to hear about the latest developments in this area and to
think about how the need to prove value can be embedded in plans for service
and product development.
