Nick,
I hope this reply to your posting in Sept is not too late, but I kept your
email because we were working on something that I thought would interest you.
This something is now being introduced with some of our new e-books.
OECD Publishing introduced persistent links for its e-books this year and
will be extending its linking systems to include DOIs in early 2005. Our
persistent links, called Easylinks, follow the simple formula:
new.sourceoecd.org/ISBN eg http://new.sourceoecd.org/9264016856. We provide
librarians with a downloadable excel table of these links from our e-library
site (covers more than 1,500 books dating back to 1998). For newly released
titles, librarians can register for our email alerts, which include the
links. So far, so normal. The next bit is more interesting!
We are preparing the ground to introduce DOI-based links at the chapter
level. This will bring our books into line with journal-type online
publishing. Our goal is to make our books compatible with CrossRef so the
bibliographies become linkable. I anticipate including these gradually for
new books during 2005. Now comes the really interesting bit and closer to
your question, I think.
We're also working at a deeper level. OECD publications are very rich in
tables and charts. Readers would love to be able to download these tables and
charts in Excel - so we're piloting a system called 'StatLink' which enables
them to do this. In the enclosed e-book, OECD in Figures, at the foot of each
table (bottom right), you'll see a DOI link marked 'StatLink'. Click (or key
the DOI into your browser) and you'll get an Excel version of the table. We
hope to publish at least 25 books with StatLinks in 2005.
You may be interested to know that we're including the StatLinks in the print
editions too, so the Excel tables are available to all readers.
We welcome feedback on any of these ideas.
Yours sincerely,
Toby Green

Subject: E-books and reference linking
I'm doing some research into e-book services and their interaction with
reference-linking software (e.g. Open URL, DOI, etc.). Can anyone point me to
any articles on the topic or offer any expertise?
At the moment, I'm only aware of options for shallow-linking to specific book
titles. I'm interested in exploring what options there might be for
deep-linking to individual chapters for example, in the same way as we can
link to specific journal articles within a given journal.
Thanks
Nick
